How I passed my PTCB exam after failing twice ๐
May 28, 2026

If you're reading this after failing your PTCB exam, I want you to know something: I've been there. Not once, but twice. I know what it feels like to walk out of that testing center feeling defeated, frustrated, and questioning whether you're capable of becoming a certified pharmacy technician. The good news is that I eventually passed on my third attempt, and today I want to share exactly what happened, what I learned, and what I would do differently.
When I graduated from my pharmacy technician program, I felt like I needed to take the PTCB exam immediately. At the time, the exam had nine content areas, and I was completely overwhelmed. I was stressed, anxious, and honestly overstudying. I spent so much time trying to memorize every little detail that my brain felt overloaded. The craziest part was that when I sat down for the exam, I actually recognized a lot of the information. I knew I had studied it before and I knew I had seen it somewhere in my notes. However, nothing was clicking. It felt like my mind completely froze. To this day, it was one of the scariest testing experiences I've ever had. I walked out of that testing center already knowing I had failed, and unfortunately, I was right.
After failing the first time, I was honestly traumatized. My confidence was completely gone, and I waited several months before scheduling another exam. Looking back, that was probably not the best decision. When I finally decided to retest, life got in the way. I had a hospital exam around the same time, work responsibilities, and a lot of pressure on myself to pass. The moment I started the second PTCB exam, I already knew I wasn't mentally prepared. I remember sitting there thinking, 'I'm going to fail this.' That's never the mindset you want going into an exam. Unfortunately, I was right again and failed my second attempt.
Looking back, my biggest mistake wasn't failing. My biggest mistake was waiting too long after my first attempt to retest. When you fail an exam, the information is still relatively fresh in your mind. The longer you wait, the more material you have to relearn. While I don't recommend rushing into another exam before you're ready, I also don't recommend waiting forever. Give yourself time to regroup, create a plan, identify your weak areas, and get back to studying as soon as possible.
My third attempt was completely different from the first two. Instead of trying to study everything all at once, I created a realistic study plan. I gave myself permission to take breaks and stopped putting so much pressure on myself. Rather than cramming information into my head for hours at a time, I focused on studying consistently. I also kept my exam date private. Nobody knew I was taking the test except me. This may sound simple, but it removed a huge amount of pressure. I wasn't worried about people texting me afterward asking if I passed. I was able to focus completely on my own progress and preparation.
The two resources that helped me the most were my Mosby's Pharmacy Technician textbook and the Medical Pocket Prep app. I also found helpful PTCB study materials through Mometrix โ you can check them out here: https://ref.mometrix.com/1119.htm. Instead of constantly searching for new study materials, I went back to the basics and reviewed the information I already had. My textbook helped me strengthen my foundation and understand concepts rather than simply memorizing facts. I also used the Medical Pocket Prep app daily. The practice questions helped me identify weak areas and become more comfortable answering exam-style questions. Instead of passively reading information, I was actively testing myself every day, which made a huge difference.
If you failed your PTCB exam, please don't give up. Failing does not mean you're not smart enough, and it certainly doesn't mean you'll never become a certified pharmacy technician. Sometimes it simply means your study method needs to change. Learn from what didn't work, create a realistic study schedule, take breaks when needed, and practice questions consistently. Most importantly, don't let one failed attempt convince you that you're incapable. I failed twice before passing, and I know many other pharmacy technicians who had similar experiences.
When I finally saw that passing score on my third attempt, I was overwhelmed with relief. I didn't pass because the exam suddenly became easier. I passed because I changed my approach, reduced my stress, studied smarter, and believed in myself again. Passing the PTCB exam after failing twice taught me that success isn't always about being the smartest person in the room. Sometimes it's about being willing to get back up after a setback and keep trying.
If you're currently studying for the PTCB exam or preparing to retest, keep going. Your passing score may be closer than you think. ๐
